Move to Zero:
Getting Everyone on the Same Package

The more you’ve done, the more you can do.

After creating and launching multiple packaging systems, Nike asked us to implement those systems across all global retail touchpoints, from their factory stores to their presence at the Olympics. As big as that was, we saw an even larger opportunity: to vertically integrate packaging production, from procurement to manufacturing.

Key to us taking the lead and connecting the right groups was our deep knowledge of licensing and manufacturing programs. As a partner tackling production on a global scale, we were able to improve efficiency with significantly greener materials—driving Nike’s mission toward zero-footprint packaging with a positive impact on their business.

A retail system at scale, and a step forward as a more sustainable brand.

A message on every bag

We developed sustainable solutions for retail by replacing single-use plastic bags with base forms made of recyclable and reusable materials that each store could uniquely brand. And used some of that space to describe Nike’s Move to Zero program and their deepened commitment to sustainability.

These sustainable retail practices have not only helped Nike towards its goals as a sustainable business, it’s yielded coveted collectors items. Their reusable totes have become popular enough to be sold—bringing money back into local sustainability programs.

To introduce the Move to Zero program, we elevated Nike’s flagship product—their shoes—with messaging about the recyclable materials used in the box and the shoes.

Without-the-box thinking

The Nike OneBox is a shoebox made of 90% recycled material that ships in its own container, eliminating the wasteful “box in a box” issue. Furthermore, it functions as a return box, eliminating a possible third box.

Going for the gold standard

When Nike asked us to bring Move to Zero to the Olympics, we already had the principles and volume in place to create Team USA garment bags from sustainable materials.

Our design journey led us to include visual elements from Nike Grind—their circular design initiative that uses post-industrial manufacturing scrap to make new materials.

Working directly with the Nike Grind team, we  included details in the garment bag’s zipper and buckles that matched the signature pattern of their Olympic medal stand.

Move to Zero, systemized

The next step was to help Nike evolve the global packaging system to include Move to Zero’s look, feel, and materials. This broad effort required us to build a cohesive system spanning all types of equipment and apparel, across billions of packages.

One system fits all

Before this project, each region was responsible for its own packaging, a major obstacle to brand consistency. We developed a design system for Nike’s digital shipping with the flexibility and nuance to fit any form factor—providing a unified global platform of sustainable materials for all geographic regions.

Sustainability is universal

As part of our effort to transform Nike’s digital shipping system, we carefully honed Move to Zero’s tone of sustainability messaging so that it could be appreciated in different languages.
