Branding Cal Poly’s Extra-curricular Campus

The Recreation Center on the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo campus is the first of its kind in the California system, and a flagship meeting place that has been emulated on many other university campuses. To continue to serve as a congregating spot for Cal Poly students, the nearly 20-year-old facility has undergone a large-scale expansion. The facility update has the multiple goals of encouraging fitness and well-being, and helping to maintain a robust campus community – all on-campus.

The opening of the new Recreation Center in 2012 is the optimal time for the Associated Students organization to undertake a brand update. The launch of a new image will announce the upgraded facility, signaling the vitality of the organization. Tolleson's several Cal Poly alums worked with a staff and student consortium on the identity study; and the result was a Look Book providing guidance to campus-based and agency designers.

Rick Johnson, Executive Director, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Associated Students invited Tolleson to return to campus to tour the Rec Center site with architects Cannon Design‚ in order to inform development of a signage program for the facility. In Rick‚'s words, "We want to make sure we do justice to the brand work and the way its application is expressed to customers." In addition to satisfying mandatory wayfinding, ADA and emergency response requirements, the ASI team envisions several opportunities at key points for special marquis treatments.
